Start With a Photo

What to upload, and why almost any good photo is enough.

What makes a good photo

  • Face clearly visible, not obscured by shadows or other people
  • Natural light, outdoors or near a window works best
  • Recent photo that reflects how your child looks now
  • A natural expression rather than a heavily posed one
  • Standard smartphone photo quality is completely fine

What we build from it

The photo becomes the visual reference for a custom watercolor-style character illustration. Hair color, skin tone, eye color, and general features are all captured. The illustration is crafted specifically for this child, not drawn from a stock template with a name added. See how the portrait is created from your photo.

You'll see the character portrait in your free preview before any printing happens. If the likeness needs adjustment, you can request it before the book is finalized.

What Libronauts Builds From Your Photo

The photo starts the illustration. The book is built from much more than that.

A Custom Character Illustration

Watercolor-style artwork where the hero genuinely resembles your child, their hair, eyes, skin tone, and features captured in a storybook art style. The character appears throughout the book, on the cover and inside every spread.

An Original Story Written for Them

Not a template. An entirely original narrative written from scratch around your child's personality, interests, age, and world. The plot, the challenges the hero faces, the way the story resolves, all of it is written specifically for this child.

A Hardcover Worth Keeping

Printed by Gelato on thick silk-finish paper with museum-quality archival ink and durable hardcover binding. Built for a thousand bedtime readings. Built to survive childhood and last for decades after.

A Free Preview Before Any Print

Before the book goes to press, you receive a preview showing the character portrait, book cover, and a sample spread. Approve it, or request changes. The book is only printed once you're completely satisfied.

The Photo Gives Us the Face.
Tell Us Who They Are.

The best books come from knowing the child beyond their appearance.

Age and name

Age calibrates the story's reading level, themes, and emotional depth. A book for a 3-year-old reads very differently from one for an 8-year-old.

Personality and temperament

Bold or cautious? Curious or careful? Loud or observant? These qualities shape how the hero acts, what they care about, and how they solve problems.

Interests and obsessions

Whatever your child is passionate about, animals, space, football, art, can become the world the story lives in. The more specific, the more the book feels like theirs.

Siblings, pets, and important people

Family members, best friends, pets, anyone who matters to your child can appear in the story as a named supporting character.

Any details that matter

A favourite colour, a phrase they always say, a specific fear they've recently overcome, small details become the texture that makes a story feel real.

Nothing more than that

You don't need to write the story yourself. You just need to tell us who your child is. Libronauts does the rest.

See the Book Before It Prints

The free preview includes the character illustration, the book cover, and a sample interior spread. Check the portrait likeness. Read the opening of the story. Request changes to anything. Only order when it looks right.

Not a template. Not a name swap. An original story built around who your child actually is.

A Keepsake, Not a Novelty

Libronauts books are printed as heirloom hardcovers: thick silk-finish pages, museum-quality archival ink, durable binding that holds up to years of handling. The Heirloom edition is 8x8 inches. The Magna is 11x11. Both are designed to last as long as the memory the story captures. Starting at $69, with free US shipping.

Questions About the Photo Process

Common questions about turning a photo into a custom book.

What format should I upload the photo in?
JPEG and PNG are both fine. Most photos taken on a smartphone are ready to upload without any preparation. What matters is clarity: a photo where your child's face is visible and in focus. Very old, very small, or heavily filtered photos may produce a weaker likeness, but a recent phone photo almost always works well.
Does the photo have to be professionally taken?
No. Professional photography is not required and often not ideal, the best reference photos are recent, natural, and well-lit. A photo taken outdoors in natural light, or near a window indoors, typically produces the best illustration results. The goal is a clear view of your child's face; everything else is secondary.
What happens after I upload the photo?
After you share the photo and fill out your child's details, Libronauts begins building the book. The first thing created is a character portrait, a watercolor-style illustration based on your photo. Then the story is written from scratch around the details you've shared. You receive a preview showing the portrait, cover, and a sample spread before any printing takes place.
Can I upload multiple photos?
You can share one primary reference photo, which is used for the character illustration. Additional context, a photo showing a distinctive hairstyle, or a note about a feature that matters to you, can be included in the details section. The illustration system works from a single clear reference, so the best results come from choosing your strongest photo rather than submitting several.
How long does it take to create the book?
Your preview is typically ready within a few hours of submitting your order. Once you approve the preview, printing and shipping takes 5 to 10 business days depending on your location. Libronauts ships via Gelato's global print network, so delivery is fast regardless of where you are. Rush options are available at checkout.
What if I am not happy with how the character looks?
You'll see the character illustration in your preview before anything is printed. If the likeness isn't right, the hair color is off, a feature isn't quite captured, you can request adjustments. We revise until the illustration feels accurate. Nothing is printed until you're satisfied with how the character looks.

Photo In. Story Out.

Share a photo and a few details about your child. Libronauts creates the illustrated character, writes the original story, and prints the hardcover. You see a free preview before anything ships. Satisfaction guaranteed.
